8 Amazing Celebrity Wedding Dresses from 2017

The end of 2017 is near so today we’re taking a look back at some celebs who tied the knot this year and brides who did it in serious style! Of course one of the most anticipated weddings of the year had to be Pippa Middleton and her beautiful Giles Deacon gown didn’t disappoint. And of course we followed our own celeb blogger Ciara Doherty’s wedding journey this past year too and were super excited to see what she chose to don for her special day. You can see her incredible gown and other stunning celebrity wedding dresses below…

Ciara Doherty in Bespoke Creation by The Attic Bridalwear Boutique

We were bowled over by our very own Celeb Blogger Ciara Doherty’s bespoke wedding dress when she married fiancé Richard in August this year in their dream venue – La Garriga de Castelladral in the heart of Catelonia. Her incredible gown was handmade by Irish designer Orlaith Carroll of The Attic Bridalwear Boutique in Limerick. Ciara had shown Orlaith pictures of dresses that she loved and asked her to come up with a design just right for her. The result was a hand-beaded bespoke dress that required hours of slow, painstaking work but it sure paid off. Ciara said: “It sounds silly but I’d never worn anything so perfect for me”. Read all about Ciara’s stunning Spanish wedding here!

Pippa Middleton in Giles Deacon

Pippa Middleton married fiancé James Matthews in May and her dress was a major talking point! Pippa looked like a classic beauty in a custom made Giles Deacon wedding dress. The incredible bespoke gown was constructed entirely of lace that was hand appliqued to create the impression of having no seams. It featured a sweeping full skirt, beautiful cap sleeves and high neck and was reported to have cost in the region of £40K.

Emmy Rossum in Carolina Hererra

Actress Emmy Rossum married director and Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail in New York in May. She knew exactly who would design her special gown and put the plans in motion for a show-stopping Carolina Herrera number. The off-the-shoulder gown with a sweeping train (the bodice’s shape was meant to resemble the iconic Frank Lloyd Wright-designed museum where they tied the knot) was the epitome of modern elegance and we think the Shameless star looked incredible!

Miranda Kerr in Dior

Thank you Maria Grazia Chiuri and @dior for creating my dream wedding dress ✨❤️🙏🏻😍t

A post shared by Miranda (@mirandakerr) on

May was a busy month for weddings and also saw Australian model Miranda Kerr wed Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel. She looked incredible in a Custom Dior Haute Couture gown, designed by the brand’s artistic director Maria Grazia Chiuri. The inspiration behind the long-sleeved, high-necked satin dress which was was appliquéd with lillies was Grace Kelly’s iconic style from her 1956 wedding to Prince Rainier of Monaco. She completed her look with a showstopping pearl encrusted tiara designed by London-based milliner Stephen Jones.

Serena Williams in Alexander McQueen

Tennis star Serena Williams stunned at her November wedding to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. The pair said ‘I Do’ at New Orleans’ Contemporary Arts Center with their adorable daughter Alexia Junior by their side. Serena’s ball gown, designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, had the wow factor in spades thanks to its voluminous skirt and according to Serena was “completely the opposite of what I ever thought I would choose for myself”. Serena told Vogue, she fell in love with the ball gown silhouette on a trip to London to meet Sarah: “I loved the idea of doing a really spectacular ball gown, and it has turned out to be such an incredibly special piece.”

Suzanne Jackson in Hayley Paige from McElhinneys Bridal Rooms

Photo via Independent.ie

Beauty blogger Suzanne Jackson of SoSueMe wowed on her Big Day with hubby Dylan O’Connor back in August. The pair had a glamorous celebration in the 5 star Powerscourt Estate in Wicklow and Suzanne’s stunning Hayley Paige creation was perfect for their fairy tale day. Suzanne worked with McElhinneys Bridal Rooms in Ballybofey, Co. Donegal and American designer Hayley Paige to create her incredible bespoke princess gown complete with plunging sweetheart neckline, long lace sleeves and lace bodice with hand-stitched pearls.

Ronda Rousey in Galia Lahav

Happiest day of my life….

A post shared by rondarousey (@rondarousey) on

Actress and UFC star Ronda Rousey tied the knot in August this year to fellow fighter Travis Browne. She described their Hawaiian wedding as a “backyard Mexican Corona party” to People Style and wanted a beachy but laid back gown to match. The bride opted for a gorgeous hand-beaded Galia Lahav mermaid gown and looked absolutely beautiful!

Charlotte Church

Welsh Singer Charlotte Church kept things low key for her wedding to musician Jonathan Powell in Cardiff in October. The pair had an intimate ceremony held under a tree with just their closest family and friends. Charlotte hasn’t revealed where she got her stunning ethereal gown with tulle embroidered skirt and off-the-shoulder detail but we adore it and think it goes perfectly with her fab floral crown.

10 High Street and Online Stores with Wedding Collections

Since around 2016, most stores have woken up to the fact that – hello – brides with budgets want to look gorgeous too! So, in case you didn’t know, here’s a list of 10 high street and online stores with wedding collections. This is just the tip of the iceberg. And also, even if some of the wedding collections aren’t located in Ireland, they still deliver to Ireland, either for free or for a tiny price (we checked them all). Ready? Enjoy!

Monsoon

high street and online stores with wedding collections

They’ve had a wedding collection for a few years now, and if you’ve never shopped there or had the pleasure of owning something by Monsoon, then you’ll be positively surprised by their quality. The wedding section is right smack in the middle of the home page menu, and they get big kudos from us for that. They’ve got the bride, the bridesmaids, the mother-of-the-bride, the guests and the kids all covered, plus gorgeous accessories we are salivating over. Go have a browse.

Debenhams

high street and online stores with wedding collections

A lovely large selection of every wedding essential is waiting at Debenhams, and it’s easy to find on their website too, as part of their main site menu, towards the right side. There’s an added convenience of shopping for all the key people for the wedding itself, plus honeymoon stuff and gifts too. You’ll find here one of the largest selections of bridal gowns, and all the most popular silhouettes. You can also book a free appointment with a personal shopper to take you around the store. Bonus!

French Connection

high street and online stores with wedding collections

Dare we say, this is BHLDN’s more affordable little sister? The Wedding Collection was announced in 2017, and launched at the beginning of 2018. You’ll find the Wedding Shop under ‘woman’, and sections for bridal wear, bridesmaids and accessories. At the time of writing, the selection is small, but it covers literally every essential – simple, elaborate, short, long and there’s also a separates combo of lacy trousers and top (a trend that’s still going strong, a great alternative to a pantsuit). Also at the time of writing, the highest priced item cost €425 – a win for any small budget.

ASOS

high street and online stores with wedding collections

The wedding section is slightly hidden on their website, but you can still get there in three clicks: first ‘women’, then ‘clothing’, and then ‘shop by occasion’ and wedding is the first option. You get a WHAMO of a result with over 2000 items, which you then have to narrow down by filtering, otherwise you’ll be scrolling through a mishmash of bridal dresses, bridesmaid dresses, shoes and accessories. But hey, that’s part of the fun, right? Again, we have to highlight the separates options here, because we’re fans of reducing the headache for the brides! Like the blue satin skirt you see above – you buy this and a simple top, the bridesmaids use some sparkly shoes they have, DONE!

H&M

high street and online stores with wedding collections

The wedding section could be a little easier to find and better arranged, but once you find it, it has a lot of charming pieces. It’s listed under ‘ladies’, and then you have to look under ‘campaigns’ to find The Wedding Shop. When we browsed the site, there were no filters available, but the entire collection has only about 50 pieces, so it’s easy to scroll through them. While there are only three bridal gowns, there’s much more for bridesmaids, and even a few pieces for kids, with pink and blue dominating the selection in 2018. We saw quite a few pieces we loved.

Missguided.ie

high street and online stores with wedding collections

We love that they make a little joke about their wedding collection, calling the page Missbrided! The wedding collection is mercifully easy to find towards the bottom of the main menu. When we browsed, there were seven wedding gowns and plenty more for bridesmaids, in total over 400 items (including shoes). This is a good place to shop for brides who have a budget, but aren’t very traditional.

Ted Baker London

high street and online stores with wedding collections

Well, they’ve gone and launched a new section on their website called ‘Wedding: Tie the Knot‘. Just hover over ‘women’ and you’ll see it in the dropdown. The catchy slogan ‘get wed with Ted’ will stick in your mind while you browse, and there’s much to browse. Gowns, shoes, bridesmaids’ dresses, accessories… just over 200 products, all priced a little still friendly to small budgets, with not a single item over £1000. What caught our eye especially was the gorgeous fabrics. P.S. You can shop this gorgeous collection in Brown Thomas too!

Whistles

high street and online stores with wedding collections

Their website says ‘made with the contemporary bride in mind’, and they sure deliver. Whistles have a solid wedding collection of 10 bridal gowns, and a few dozen bridesmaid gowns and dresses, plus essential accessories. In this 2018 collection, lace rules the look, and our particular favourite is a lace pantsuit with pockets! Pockets are everything. You’ll find all the dresses and other lovely things under ‘women’, where Whistles Wedding has its own section. Very nice indeed.

Coast

high street and online stores with wedding collections

We love online stores who put their wedding section front and centre, and Coast is doing it right. They cover all the girls – the bride, her mother, the flower girls and the bridesmaids. They also threw in a honeymoon section for good measure, because hey, nothing is more efficient than shopping for everything at once. What we love most is the separates! There are quite a few fabulous jackets which are sleek and contemporary (psst, we’re showing you our fave above), just begging to be personalised with some fabulous touches. Go have a look.

Oasis

high street and online stores with wedding collections

No bridal gowns, but bridesmaids’ gowns galore instead. You’ll find them all under ‘clothing’, then ‘shop by edit’ and look for ‘bridesmaids’. They say your girls will shine bright, and they sure will. In the 2018 collection, you’ll find all the super-flattering colours – a little pink, some peach, a gorgeous blue, plus some muted greys and blacks. There are shoes and bags to match everything, and even temporary tattoos and other fun stuff for a bit of humour. With this collection, none of your bridesmaids could possibly be grumpy about what they’re wearing.

Ask the Experts: What are the Big Bridal Trends for 2018/2019?

Getting ready to embark on your quest for ‘the one’? Wondering what styles are going to be gracing the rails of gorgeous Irish bridal stores when you visit? We asked the experts – the bridal boutiques what styles will be big for the year ahead! Here’s what they had to say…

Alice May Bridal, Dublin | View Profile

Savin London | Anna Georgina

The trends for 2018/2019 seem to be lots of floral vibes in 3D laces and colour. Little splashes of colour everywhere, which is so fab!!

Alice May Bridal stock Willowby by Watters, Catherine Deane, Anna Georgina, Savin London, Nicola Anne, Tara Keely, Raimon Bundo, Alena Leena and Beside Couture.

Bridal by Nikki Kavanagh, Meath | View Profile

Dando London | Nicole Spose

More simplistic fabrics like crepe and chiffon are still charging ahead with plunging necklines or open backs. We are also starting to see embellishment making a come back – great for the magpies in us!

Bridal by Nikki Kavanagh stock Dando London, La Sposa, MGNY, White One, Dessy, Annylinn and Nicole Spose.

Memories – The Bridal Boutique (Dublin & Cork) | View Profile

Watters | Ti Adora

Patterns and flowers and soft floaty dresses. Lace is back with a bang. Sleeves are also going to be a big look.

Memories – The Bridal Boutique (located in Dublin and Cork) stock Watters Wtoo, Willowby, Cabotine, Ti Adora, Modeca, and Chic Nostalgia, San Patrick and Ashley and Justin are arriving in the summer.

Sharon Gregory Design Studio, Cork | View Profile

Dresses by Ronald Joyce

Lace is still big news for the upcoming seasons, sleeves, cover ups – strapless is left for the evening with little capelets or jackets worn for the daytime, colour such as blush or champagne, hints of metallics whether it’s in belts or beading. And of course the upcoming royal wedding will have a big influence on trends for the upcoming season.

Sharon Gregory Design Studio design and make wedding dresses in house. They also stock Ronald Joyce, Victoria Jayne, Art Couture and Special Day.

Diamond Bridal, Cork | View Profile

Dress by Blue by Enzoani

Bridal Trends for 2018/2019 are Classic and Traditional but with a modern twist. For example, traditional A-Line skirts with low backs and illusion necklines. Fitted crepe gowns are part of most bridal designer collections this season, along with plunging necklines and dramatic trains.

Diamond Bridal stock Enzoani, Blue by Enzoani, Beautiful by Enzoani, La Sposa, Callista and Nicole Spose.

MK Bridal Boutique, Meath | View Profile

Willowby by Watters | Blush by Hayley Paige

Personally I think the trends are changing which is a good thing, for many years we have seen the deep V dominate bridal trends. Brides are definitely moving towards more structure, higher necklines and colour! Brides are getting bolder and so are their colours choices, as well as your usual white, ivory and blush we are seeing brides sway towards champagne golds and metallic colours like this stunning Willowby gown available from MK Bridal.

MK Bridal Boutique stock Enzoani, Paloma Blanca, Allure, Willowby by Waters, White One San Patrick, Hayley Paige and Lou Lou.

Angelo Bridal, Dublin | View Profile

Mark Lesley | MGNY

One of the main and my favourite trends for the upcoming season is the off-the-shoulder neckline. Gone are the days where every dress was strapless. Brides can now opt for a look where the straps fall down around their shoulders or for extra coverage and a more vintage look, the wedding gown can feature long sleeves, while keeping the shoulders exposed.

Another trend that I adore is the Veil across the shoulders. It’s such a unique and beautiful way to cover up during the ceremony. For the brides that are looking to change their look, the veil across the shoulders can be used as the central detail for the first look and then showcase the gorgeous gown for the second.

Plunging necklines – a trend that hasn’t missed any runway. It’s sexy, it’s feminine and completely breathtaking. Low V-necklines may also incorporate lace or sheer fabric into the design for added modesty.

Angelo Bridal stock MGNY (Madeline Gardner New York), Eternity Bride, Mark Lesley and Cara Mia.

Aideen Cross – Award Winning Bridal Designer, Kildare | View Profile

Dress by Aideen Cross – Bridal Designer

The predictions for 2019 are for a touch of colour, but more in the shades of silver/blue or soft golds as well as metallic details – whether it’s on the dress or just in accessories, it’ll be a must have. Rose gold is trending for bridesmaid dresses. Bodices are becoming more structured with fuller skirts. Necklines are getting higher, rather than that deep cut, and high low hemlines are going to become more popular. Hair vines are still in and veils never seem to go out of fashion, though finer and more sheer. Now that could and will all change when the Royal Wedding takes place next month, that will be one to watch out for!

Aideen Cross is a bridal designer that specialises in bespoke wedding dresses, designed to each bride’s specific requirements.

Ask the Experts: When Should I Start Shopping for My Wedding Dress?

$

You might be dying to book your first wedding dress appointment as soon as the ring is on your finger! But if your planning journey lasts anything up to two years, just when is the ideal time to get shopping? We asked the experts – bridal boutiques – when is the best time to start wedding dress shopping and how many people should you bring with you for this fun experience…

Angelo Bridal, Dublin | View Profile

Dress by MGNY

When deciding to go wedding dress shopping, how prepared a bride is can sometimes be more crucial than how early she starts. A bride-to-be needs to have a general idea of the shape and details she wants to wear and also how the dress will tie in with the overall theme of the wedding. It’s important for her to feel comfortable in her skin when starting fitting wedding dresses, because choosing the gown is ultimately based on how beautiful it makes the bride feel. Therefore, the right time to start wedding dress shopping is different for every bride, but the rule of thumb is to allow between 6 and 9 months before the wedding.

We always recommend to our brides to start shopping 9-12 months before the wedding, whether this be in store or getting ideas online before you head to the shops, wedding dresses take around 3-6 months to order therefore you need to shop ahead of time to make sure your perfect dress arrives in plenty of time before your wedding and make sure to leave enough time for any alterations as well.

How many people would you advise to bring with you?

We advise that you only bring 2 to 3 of your closest friends or family members with you. When you bring a large entourage with you, there can be too many different opinions which could make your final decision confusing, once you have chosen your dress you can always bring different friends or family members to your alteration fittings to show them the dress before the big day.

Chase Brides, Algarve stock Mori Lee and an exclusive collection by Randy Fenoli, Allure, Cabotine and their Own Brand designed by owner Kristina Louise.

Diamond Bridal, Cork | View Profile

Our recommendation is 12 months prior to your wedding date. By the time you find ‘the one’, it will take 6/8 months to come in and you need to allow time for alterations at the other end. Once it’s ordered, you can relax and put it in the capable hands of the boutiques and not feel under pressure.

How many people would you advise to bring with you?

We would advise bringing 1 or 2 trusted and honest friends or family members whom you feel most comfortable with to your appointment. From experience we have found that too many opinions can be distracting for the bride. Once you have found ‘the one’, we invite our brides to bring along bridesmaids and whoever else they wish for the ‘say yes to the dress moment’ and a well deserved bottle of bubbles.

You should start shopping for your dress 10-12 months in advance.

How many people would you advise to bring with you?

Bring one or two people who you love and trust i.e close friends and family. They want the best for you and will help you make the right choice. DON’T bring 100’S of people to your appointments!! The more people there are, the more conflicting opinions there will be. Choose your entourage wisely!

You should visit 3-5 shops max.

DON’T confuse yourself by visiting 20 shops, it will take the fun out of the whole experience.

Do listen to your bridal consultant. They might suggest a style that you may not necessarily pick yourself…

Don’t… limit your choice by ruling out particular styles. Stay open minded, very often brides go for the total opposite of what they originally wanted.

MK Bridal Boutique stock Enzoani, Paloma Blanca, Allure, Willowby by Waters, White One San Patrick, Hayley Paige and Lou Lou.

If you want the experience to be relaxed and enjoyable, you should really start looking for your dress about 9 months before your wedding. Most designers and shops require a booking time of 6 months in order to order fabrics and plan fittings.

How many people would you advise to bring with you?

I would advise a bride not to bring too many people with her in the early stages while she is trying to decide on a style. Too many opinions can confuse, so a few trusted friends or family members who understand your personal taste and style is all that is required. Remember to wear a pale coloured bra for your fittings!

Gay DePaor of DePaor Designs custom makes dresses for brides. The Bridal Designer has three collections – Classic Lace, Timeless and Tea Length Eliza Collection.

Dress by Anna Georgina

As soon as the bride likes! Our dresses take about 6-8 months to arrive from ordering time so as soon as the bride can come in the better! It’s such a lovely experience, why not start as soon as you can!

How many people would you advise to bring with you?

It’s best to bring your closest friends and family, there is lots of details to go through so having people there that know the vision you have for your day is most important. We think 2 or 3 is the perfect size.

Alice May Bridal stock Willowby by Watters, Catherine Deane, Anna Georgina, Savin London, Nicola Anne, Tara Keely, Raimon Bundo, Alena Leena and Beside Couture.

Bridal by Nikki Kavanagh, Meath | View Profile

Dress by Dando London

We recommend the ideal time is approximately one year to be sure you are not under any pressure, a little earlier if you find ‘the one’ is no harm and if you are prepared to buy ‘off the peg’ then nearer to the time. It all boils down to personal preference.

How many people would you advise to bring with you?

We suggest 2-4 maximum, too many people, too many opinions. It’s nice to get validation but leave the over opinionated ones at home so you can have a clear head.

Bridal by Nikki Kavanagh stock Dando London, La Sposa, MGNY, White One, Dessy, Annylinn and Nicole Spose.

Dress by Cabotine Novias

Most brides start seriously shopping about a year ahead of their day. That gives them time to visit a few shops if needed and to go back to their favourites.

How many people would you advise to bring with you?

We advise a maximum of 3 trusted people plus yourself. It gets overwhelming otherwise.

Memories – The Bridal Boutique (located in Dublin and Cork) stock Watters Wtoo, Willowby, Cabotine, Ti Adora, Modeca, and Chic Nostalgia, San Patrick and Ashley and Justin are arriving in the summer.

Myrtle Ivory – Bridal Couture, Dublin | View Profile

We would always recommend starting the hunt approx. 12 months prior to your wedding, this way you are seeing all the most recent collections, allowing yourself ample time to do the search, narrow down the find and buy your gown 9-6 months prior to your wedding date.

How many people would you advise to bring with you?

We allow a maximum of 3 guests per bride – we really think it’s important to bring valued opinions. Brides who bring girl gangs with them tend to end up confused by all the opinions, and it’s nice to surprise people on the day. We are finding more and more brides are coming in on their own, narrowing down their search with us, and then bringing in their Mom/Sister/Aunt to show them their favourite, and we always toast it with a glass of bubbly – these moments in life must be celebrated.

Myrtle Ivory exclusively stock Stephanie Allin, David Fielden, Amanda Wakeley, Patrick Casey, Anna Kara, Claire Pettibone and Watters Couture.

Sharon Gregory Design Studio, Cork | View Profile

Everyone is different – some brides will want to be organised, some not so, 12-18 months beforehand for the organised bride, 8-12 months for the not so organised but do remember different designers have different lead times on their orders. The average lead time is 5 months to order a dress.

How many people would you advise to bring with you?

I don’t recommend a large group, it can be daunting and you don’t want 10 different opinions being thrown at you, bring your mam, sisters, maid of honour to begin with or for a more relaxed visit, just your mam. When you find the dress then bring the rest, it’s your dress and it’s how you feel in it.

Sharon Gregory Design Studio design and make wedding dresses in house. They also stock Ronald Joyce, Victoria Jayne, Art Couture and Special Day.

How many people would you advise to bring with you?

The question is not how many people to bring with you bridal dress shopping, is how many not to bring? One good friend or sister can be all you need for that honest opinion and support. You are the best judge of all, you know what doesn’t suit you so start there and then go with what feels comfortable too. It’ll be a long day.

Aideen Cross is a bridal designer that specialises in bespoke wedding dresses, designed to each bride’s specific requirements.

Ask the Experts: How Can I Get Rid of a Wedding Dress Stain?

$

Fingers crossed you WON’T be needing this advice but as with everything, it’s best to be prepared! Trying to remove a stain from your beloved wedding dress is never a scenario you want to imagine but on the off-chance a stain does make its way on to your gorgeous gúna, there are ways to get rid of it or minimise it (either way, don’t let anything get in the way of your amazing day – shrug it off and get on with enjoying your wedding). For those of you that want to be prepared for all eventualities, we’ve enlisted the help of the people that know all about wedding dresses – the bridal boutiques. They’ve got some great ways to get rid of wedding dress stains on your Big Day (just in case)…

Sharon Gregory Design Studio, Cork | View Profile

Baby wipes – carry a pack with you, they’re great for little accidents on the day!

DePaor Designs, Wicklow | View Profile

Ideally most dresses should be dry cleaned but it does no harm to prepare for the inevitable accident. Bring a couple of clean pieces of white/ivory cotton or silk with you and a diluted solution of Fairy Non Bio or similar washing gel. If it is absolutely necessary to try and remove the stain, sponge the stain gently with some warmed solution of the gel and then sponge again with some plain water to remove the detergent. But only try if absolutely necessary and don’t let a stain ruin your day. Just relax and enjoy it!  Also bring a few strong safety pins, in case when dancing etc. your train hook gives way. Remember the scout’s motto – ‘Be Prepared’!

MK Bridal Boutique, Meath | View Profile

If you happen to get blood on your wedding dress… spit on it! Saliva removes blood.

Diamond Bridal, Cork | View Profile

Non fragranced baby wipes and a soft bristled toothbrush and cold water will do the job with the majority of stains. Be careful however not to be too heavy handed with delicate fabrics.

Aideen Cross – Award Winning Bridal Designer, Kildare | View Profile

Let’s hope it never happens, bride’s worst nightmare… but I would say firstly be prepared with few handy items in a bag:

  • Small white cotton towel (all ready washed and dried)
  • Baby powder
  • Cotton buds
  • Brown paper
  • Baby wipes

Cleaning instructions don’t always apply on your wedding day as you’re looking for that quick fix. Don’t ever rub a stain, dab gently and from the inside out. Use the towel to remove any excess moisture if a spill occurs. For a lipstick stain, you could try baby wipes, gently dab and when dry, finish with baby powder. For an oily stain, cover with baby powder and brush off after 10 minutes and repeat or place brown paper over stain and apply a little heat, the paper should absorb the oil. Always use cold water on cotton to remove a blood stain. It’s best to be prepared – good luck!

Ask the Experts: What Should I Bring to My Wedding Dress Appointments & Fittings?

$

Wedding dress shopping is lots of fun, but unlike shopping for a dress for a party or an event, there’s a few things you need to keep in mind! Most bridal shops will require an appointment so make sure to ring and book one in advance – heads up, weekends and evenings will be busy so give yourself plenty of time to book it in! It’s also a good idea to book just a few shops per day – cramming in too many will just end up confusing you (side note – wedding dresses can be heavy so you might find you’re exhausted if you’ve too many shops to get to). When it comes to what to bring to your appointments and of course your dress fittings once you’ve chosen ‘the one’, we asked the experts themselves – the bridal boutiques – what to pop in your bag for this fun planning milestone! Here’s what they had to say…

What to bring to the Appointment…

Myrtle Ivory – Bridal Couture, Dublin | View Profile

When going for a bridal appointment, don’t wear any instant false tan – it ruins gowns – especially when they’re ivory. Wear nude seamless underwear if possible. Bring a pair of heels, and a good strapless bra. And bring an open mind – we’re here to help you find the dress of your dreams.

Diamond Bridal, Cork | View Profile

An open mind and a positive attitude! Comfortable clothes that are easy to get in and out of and a strapless bra are advised but not essential. We provide the rest!

Alice May Bridal, Dublin | View Profile

For your appointment with us you should bring slip on shoes, nude undergarments and hair bobbins if you wish to wear your hair up on your big day. For your dress fittings, at your alteration stage, you will need your shoes and undergarments including cups you wish to wear on your wedding day.

Your Final Dress Fittings…

Sharon Gregory Design Studio, Cork | View Profile

You will need the underwear you will be wearing and your shoes, those would be the most important things to bring for your final fitting, and bring any accessories you have to see the full effect.

Memories – The Bridal Boutique (Dublin & Cork) | View Profile

Your shoes and underwear are needed for your fittings.

MK Bridal Boutique, Meath | View Profile

When attending your bridal fitting make sure to bring your shoes and underwear you intend to wear on your wedding day. Without them, your dress can not be altered!

Aideen Cross – Award Winning Bridal Designer, Kildare | View Profile

It’s a very exciting day, your first bridal dress fitting – be sure to have your correct undergarments and shoes. These will ensure a perfect fit, you might think of bringing along jewellery and other bridal accessories as well.

Ask the Experts: When Do I Need to Order My Wedding Dress?

$

0

Wedding dresses aren’t like ordinary dresses – they have a certain lead time and it will be months before you get a glimpse of your precious order which is why it’s always best to give yourself plenty of time on the dress shopping front (our experts suggest when to start wedding dress shopping here). So just how long before the wedding do you need to order your dress? We turned to the experts again, the bridal boutiques, and asked them when brides need to get that order in – see what they had to say below…

Alice May Bridal, Dublin | View Profile

8 months and more is ideal. We can arrange rush orders for you if you don’t have that amount of time, we can cater for every bride’s needs here in Alice May Bridal.

Memories – The Bridal Boutique (Dublin & Cork) | View Profile

Ordering times can be 4-8 months depending on the designer and you need to leave time for your alterations too!

Myrtle Ivory – Bridal Couture, Dublin | View Profile

Depending on designers and depending on the fabric, it is typically a 6-7 month order time frame. If a bride doesn’t have this time frame, panic not, most designers allow for a “Rush Order” (there is a charge for these orders).

Sharon Gregory Design Studio, Cork | View Profile

The lead time on dresses are 5 months and 3 months for bridesmaids so allow a few months before the wedding for the wedding dress to come in, you don’t want to be panicking waiting on it to arrive.

Diamond Bridal, Cork | View Profile

Most Bridal Designers require 6-8 months to make your dress. Our advice, however, is as soon as you find it, order it. Most boutiques will allow payment plans and deferred delivery to accommodate this.

MK Bridal Boutique, Meath | View Profile

When ordering your dress, we would suggest ordering no later than 8 months in advance.

Ask the Experts: What Type of Dress Should I Choose for a Destination Wedding?

$

If you’re jetting off somewhere sunny for your Big Day, you might be wondering what kind of wedding dress to shop for. So we put it to the experts, the bridal boutiques – what weddings dresses work best for a gorgeous sun-filled destination wedding? Here’s what they had to say…

20 Dreamy Destination Wedding Dresses

Alice May Bridal, Dublin | View Profile

Wedding Dress by Willowby by Watters

Stick to your own style and don’t compromise purely based on the weather. It’s always great to have a lightweight dress but that doesn’t mean if you always wanted a full gown you can’t achieve this. Try on everything you had your heart set on and we can help with making it light and wearable for the day. When it comes to transporting your dress, book a seat for your dress so it reduces creasing on the fabric.

Bridal by Nikki Kavanagh, Meath | View Profile

Wedding Dress by Nicole Spose

Honestly these days anything goes! Brides wear whatever they want for weddings abroad, the ‘destination dress’ is a thing of the past. We can take away under layers or replace with breathable fabrics to help with the heat.

In terms of transporting your dress, I would recommend flying with Aer Lingus as they tend to take your gown and hang it for you, they did for me! If not, take it with you on board and arrange for it to be steamed by your planner or the hotel.

Memories – The Bridal Boutique (Dublin & Cork) | View Profile

Wedding Dress by Chic Nostalgia

Keep it light and avoid anything too tight. Think about the weather and think about the fabric you choose. You don’t want wrinkles or sweat marks!

When it comes to transporting it, just fold it into your carry on suitcase. You can always get it pressed on the other side and you don’t want it to go missing in the hold!

Myrtle Ivory – Bridal Couture, Dublin | View Profile

Wedding Dress by Stephanie Allin

If it’s a church wedding, check with your priest about shoulders being covered – as a lot of churches in Italy and France can be quite strict about skin on show inside the church. Remember that your gown has to be weather appropriate. The likes of Stephanie Allin will add cotton linings to the inside of her large skirts to make them more breathable to wear on the day.

Sharon Gregory Design Studio, Cork | View Profile

Wedding Dress by Ronald Joyce

Think of your venue, is it on the beach? You will want a dress that’s light and flowing. Is it in a church? You can wear any style but you will need a dress that will travel well (won’t be a ball of wrinkles when you get there) and also is the dress easy to travel with as some airlines will store the dress in the back of the aircraft, while some will insist on you buying a seat for it.

We supply long dress bags and these are perfect for travelling but your airline will determine how you transport it. If they will not hang it for you and if you are not prepared to buy a seat for it, you will have to carry it in a carry on bag.

Chase Brides, Algarve | View Profile

Wedding Dress by MoriLee

When it comes to getting married abroad we know exactly what you need, as we are based in the sunny Algarve. We recommend you choose a dress that you are going to be comfortable in and one that does not have too many layers as you don’t want to overheat on your special day.

In terms of transportation, don’t worry, whether you are staying in a hotel or private villa, ALL local launderettes can dry clean or press your dress before the big day, so if you bring your dress over in a suitcase or ship it in a box, there’s no need to panic as you can get it pressed once you arrive. Of course, if you don’t want to do this, we recommend you ship it over in a large box that has space for the dress to breathe and not be squished up.

Diamond Bridal, Cork | View Profile

Wedding Dress by Nicole Spose

If you are going to a warm climate, we advise lighter fabrics and a dress that can travel well and doesn’t tend to wrinkle.

When it comes to transporting your dress, we would advise carrying the dress as hand luggage and ensure that it is covered in plastic (in case of any spillages!) and in a breathable dress bag. Most airlines are great and may even give your dress its own hanging space, it’s no harm ringing or emailing ahead.

MK Bridal Boutique, Meath | View Profile

Wedding Dress by Enzoani

When getting married abroad it’s important to pick a comfortable lightweight wedding dress that travels well. Lace is ideal as it doesn’t crease.

Travelling with your beloved wedding dress can be quite stressful, I would ask your airline if they wouldn’t mind hanging it up with the crew’s jackets for the duration of the flight. Most airlines are very obliging.

DePaor Designs, Wicklow | View Profile

Wedding Dress by DePaor Designs

If you are getting married abroad in a very warm climate, you really need to make sure that the dress is light and travels well. The tea length style is ideal, as it is so easy to pack and so comfortable to wear. For full length wedding dresses, choose a silk crepe or silk chiffon style, which will be light and airy to wear.

Aideen Cross – Award Winning Bridal Designer, Kildare | View Profile

Wedding Dress by Aideen Cross

If you’re lucky enough to be going away somewhere special for your big day, keep in mind the weather in that part of the world. Try to do dress shopping in the same climate as your wedding. Do consider a shorter length dress if it’s a beach wedding or even a high low dress. Another thing to think about is that silk or cotton will keep you cooler in a warmer climate but might not travel as well as polyester fabrics.

When it comes to transporting your gown, you should contact your airline before you fly to see what they recommend for you and your dress. I think if I was traveling with my wedding dress, I’d like it close to me and not put in the luggage department. Pack it in a weather proof zip bag and make sure the dress is secured on a hanger. You can stuff the bodice part with paper tissue so it will hold its shape.

Wedding Veils – Choosing the Right One

Wedding veils… we know them as that pretty accessory you’d only wear on your wedding day. Did you know that brides originally started wearing them because wedding folklore told us that a veil would protect the bride from evil spirits? Well, a veil was also considered good luck, especially if it caught fire on the altar. Well, these days a veil is just a beautiful accessory which completes the bridal look. That said, there is a lot we can learn about the different veil styles, lengths and types!

Where to purchase wedding veils in Ireland: Click here to view our top picks!

Wedding veils – an expert tip

Experts recommend selecting a veil that does not compete with your dress. So, if you’ve opted for an elaborate gown, then pair it with a simple veil. Likewise, a decorative veil is the perfect finishing touch to a simple dress. If the dress and veil are too busy, it’ll detract from the main star of the show: you!

Types of veils

Blusher Veil: this is a short single layer which is worn over the face and sits below the chin. It often helps soften sharp features.

Fly-Away Veil: a multi-layered headpiece which barely brushes the shoulder. This is considered a casual veil and we recommend that brides pair this with a casual gown.

Elbow-length Veil: as the name suggests, it sits at the elbow and doesn’t overpower the dress. Petite brides under 5’4 will look great with this length!

Fingertip Veil: it reaches to the fingertips when your arms are hanging naturally. It compliments most wedding dresses and brides over 5’7 will look awesome in one.

Chapel-length Veil: it extends to the floor, roughly 2 and a half yards from the headpiece. It flows over the train and is quite formal.

Cathedral Veil: this is the most formal of the veils and should be worn with the cathedral train. It flows 3 and a half yards from the headpiece and you should remove it before the reception.

Wedding veils for each face shape

Round Face: a veil which falls along the side of your face will help narrow it. Never wear a hair band-style headpiece as this will accentuate a wide face or forehead.

Square Face: a longer veil teamed with face-framing tendrils of hair help relax a strong jaw.

Oblong Face: a waterfall veil and a wide tiara help add width to a longer face. Stay away from piled up hair and opt for a comb-style headpiece.

Heart shaped face: most veils are too full for you; choose a backpiece where the veil shows up behind the neckline and adds width at the jaw.

Oval: you’re the luckiest of the bunch as any type of veil will compliment your face!

Top veil tips

  • Your hairstyle makes a difference to the look of your wedding veil. Choose how your hair will look on your Big Day and try on veils with your hair in a similar style.
  • Consider your wedding location. A long veil isn’t practical for a beach wedding.
  • If the colour of your veil and dress is not the same, that’s alright. Just ensure that the veil is a shade lighter rather than a shade darker than your dress.
