Bridal boleros, tops, lace jackets and capelets have become the champion of wedding wear in recent years – whether worn as the finishing piece to a simple satin A-line or as a chic cover up for the ceremony or evening drinks reception, these little extras are worth every penny when it comes to the Big Day. And the best thing about them is – as with every other accessory brides choose to don on the day – anything goes! From eye-catching sequin cardies and pretty beaded capelets, to glamorous fur stoles and classic lace jackets, there is something to give an extra layer of pizazz to any wedding dress.

Finding the perfect bolero however can be a bit tricky – yes you may need that neon bejewelled cape but does it really go with your traditional and already heavily embellished mermaid gown? Possibly not. The trick to finding the right style is all about balance. These ultra romantic pieces are designed to create two very different looks in one and are a great option if you want a more formal style for your ceremony.

When it comes to the more understated bolero, we’re loving some of the beautiful sheer gathered long sleeve styles offered by designers such as Pronovias (this stunning lace-trimmed number is sure to be the piece sheer-seeking brides are looking for!) and the simple capped sleeve boleros which offer a hint of lace or embellishment without taking away from the dress. Of course the cape and bridal capelet are always on trend (even more so now that ASOS stocks a few!) and these can come in any length, colour and with varying degrees of embellishment to suit the bride’s style.

Grace Loves Lace has always appeared in some shape or form in our summer and destination wedding dress edits but this collection could easily translate to a boho ‘backyard’ or chic city soiree for brides who have their feet firmly planted on Irish soil. Modern silhouettes decorated with crisp white accents, geometric printed lace, long raglan sleeves and daringly low keyhole backs are the focal point of Blanc and indeed this contemporary feel flows through to sharply tailored separates (including a pair of stunning silk palazzo pants that we very much adore) and simple accessories. Of course as with all GLL’s offerings there is a softness to this collection – found in gowns such as the stunning Sofia – a delicate flowing V-neck, capped sleeve Chantilly lace gown with full circle skirt and a dramatic 100cm train – and the glamorously bold full length Roberta cape with its statement 1m long Chantilly lace train – certainly something for a bride who wants to make an entrance!

Anne Georgina may not be a label most brides-to-be come across on a day-to-day basis, but this South African design house is currently making huge waves in the wedding world. Launched in 2012 by renowned South African couturier Kobus Dippenaar, Anna Georgina’s mantra is that every woman is unique and that these differences deserve to be embraced. With an emphasis on detail and the juxtaposition of structure and fluidity, Dippenaar has crafted a collection of luxurious, couture-style wedding dresses for a bride that tends towards tradition but wants to make a glamorous, fashion-forward impact on her wedding day.

While his 2015 collection heavily featured slinky silk satin skirts, deep V-necks and dreamy puddle trains, 2016 sees a graduation to a heavily embellished classic ball gown and mermaid silhouettes – think Berta Bridal meets Ersa Atelier. Floral appliques and twinkling Swarovski crystals add a softness to some of the more structured styles, while others remain strikingly unembellished to emphasise clean lines and movement of a bias cut silk charmeuse.

There is a distinctly regal feel to this collection, which is a triumph in balance both in the construction of the dresses themselves (tight and defining corsetry vs voluptuous, tumbling tulle skirts) and in the delicate mix of the contemporary and the traditional.

Hugely popular both on the aisle and on the high street at the moment, the plunge dress is one of the more difficult styles to dress. The go-to undergarment for many women has been the Wonderbra Ultimate Plunge Bra which is at present trickier to track down than a bargain Jenny Packham headpiece (keep your eye on Littlewoods, Next, Debenhams, ASOS and Simply Be for more sizes to come in the coming weeks). Our alternatives include Fashion Forward’s U Plunge Backless Strapless Bodysuit (left) which we found in McElhinneys Department Store here in Ireland, Triumph’s Seamless Plunge Bra and the Unplunge Deep V-Neck Converter Bra from Nordstrom (if your gown is strapless, backless and has a plunge neckline – God bless you – you could give Nordstrom’s Unplunge Backless Strapless Underwire Bra a go).

2. Best Bra for Wedding Dress with Low Back

Low and detailed backs are a massive trend in wedding dresses this summer, and even if yours isn’t one of the more risque, chances are that you’ve some detail on the back that shouldn’t be ruined by the sight of a bra strap. For the full armour, check out Poirier’s Low Back Push Up Bra which is a fully padded bra with a long strap that criss-crosses at the back and ties at the tummy (we’re yet to try this one out for ourselves and worry a bit about unnecessary bulging, so make sure to try one on with a similar style dress before dropping the cash on one). If you already own a regular bra that suits the front of your gown perfectly, get your hands on a bra back converter which fits onto the hooks of your own bra and elongates to tie around the waist.

3. Best Corsets for a Strapless Wedding Dress

Of course you could just wear a strapless bra under your dress (and if doing so go for one with a little silicone around the top and a good width at the back – the more clasps the better for extra hold) but the strapless bustier is going to give you way more support and of course some lovely smooth lines under the bust. Bodices on these can be boned or unboned, but it’s really up to you and your dress as to what you go for. We love Elomi’s Underwire Bustier which contains flexible inner boning and has some pretty lace detail that makes it feel ultra bridal and Va Bien’s Longline Convertible Bustier from Bare Necessities.

4. Best Shapewear for a Wedding Dress that’s Tight on the Tummy

Many brides opting for a vintage style will be drawn towards slinky, bias cut silk gowns which look amazing but can be extremely clingy on the tummy. The solution? A pair of not-so-humble Spanx High Waisted Shorts. Spanx is a brand synonymous with shapewear and most ladies who don occasion wear more than occasionally probably already have a multitude of styles in their wardrobe! Their high waisted shorts are made specially for under dresses and contain fully boned front panels to flatten the tummy. If you’re not into the feel of shorts, give Marks & Spencer’s Firm Tummy Control Slip a go – it’s a great option for a fit and flare dress where you wear your own or an inbuilt bra. Spanx also do a OnCore Mid Thigh Full Body Suit if you’re looking to minimise your bust and aren’t wearing a strapless dress.

5. Best Underwear for a Mermaid Wedding Dress

There are lots of great shapewear options for mermaid style gowns out there – although most fit and flares should really be coming with some inbuilt lingerie and corsetry these days! If your gown isn’t as fitted as you would like a fit-and-flare however, a control slip is your new best friend. We love the look of Poirier’s Opaque Natural Forming Dress which is fitted with pre-formed cups and provides control for tummy, waist and thigh, it’s seamlessly finished and straps can be added if needed. If your dress comes with an inbuilt bra, try Naomi & Nicole’s Firm Control Tousette Slip at McElhinneys which provides hold with support straps. For those looking for something more budget-friendly, we’ve heard good things about Penneys’ Smoothing Slip which also has its own bra and comes in at a refreshing €13.00.

6. The Ultimate Wedding Dress Underwear Hacks

While researching this article we came across some frankly mad looking bits and bobs (or ‘lingerie accessories’ to give them their official title) which stick, pull, cover, push and smush everything around to help us ladies with our quest for the ‘perfect’ shape. There are bra strap converters, tape, glue (really – although we’re leaving this to the professionals) daisies, stick on bras and bustiers and some other strapless ‘slips’ we’d rather not get into (either talking about them or trying them out ourselves). Fact is, there is something out there for whatever your dress concerns are if you start looking early. With all of these solutions, make sure you try them on first and do a dry run to see what way they’ll perform on the day. While some people have never had success with a stick on bra, others find them genius, and while some swear by the ‘pricier’ shapewear on the market, others have had all the luck with briefs and slips they’ve picked up in high street stores. If all else fails, find a good seamstress to sew a lift into your dress or to adjust a comfortable bra to fit – or go without if you can still dance around without any ‘mishaps’! Just make sure you’re comfortable on the day and you’ll look incredible!

Shimmering with brilliance, the Lusan Mandongus 2017 Bridal offering is somewhat of a fitting collection to be sharing today, the day we celebrate the landing of Juno on Jupiter! Meteor Showers debuted at the SiSposaitalia Collezioni in Milan earlier this summer, impressing those present with contemporary cuts and vintage-inspired ornamentation brought together in celestial Goddess-like glory!

Looking beyond the sky for inspiration, Lusan Mandongus has created this year’s most cosmic collection of wedding dresses. We’re drawn in by the theatricality of each piece, achieved through the use of starry-like embellishments including rows of beading “resembling the planetary tracks of the Milky Way”, translucent fabrics and fanciful features such as double capes and back details.

On some of the more contemporary pieces, airy gauze works with ornamentation to catch the light and create a space-like sense of depth and subtle movement. A specially designed lace pattern adds a magical feel to others – like quasars shining through an endless night… Of course there is a delicate elegance to each of these pieces which is achieved by flared, mermaid style silhouettes (a signature of the Lusan Mandongus styles) and vintage-inspired fastenings and finishes.

The collection also gives a nod to current bridal trends with off-the-shoulder features and statement backs, which ground each creation and make them very wearable. We love this collection of sophisticated starlit creations, and can’t wait to see how they illuminate Irish brides in the future!

Today we’re throwing all thoughts of budgets and loans out the window and indulging in some pure, unadulterated designer wedding dress day dreaming. Marchesa’s 2017 bridal collection is a joyous explosion of soft and feminine embellishments, namely regal embroidery, layer upon layer of lightweight tulle and the most devastatingly pretty petal appliques – and every dress has something to seriously swoon over!

Many of these gorgeous gowns reflect a secret garden in the spring feeling, with hand-cut organza petals adding beautiful movement and depth on some and delicate shimmering crystals mimicking a morning dew on others. There is a harder edge to some of the gowns however, with striking detachable capes and skirts giving a nod to contemporary styles currently seen on the catwalks.

The Marchesa signature is all over the collection of course, with designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig flitting between sexy, sophisticated fit and flairs and Marchesa’s iconic A-lines – a style favoured by the ‘fine art’ bride for its romantic, graceful feel – with complete ease. The entire collection is beautifully anchored by a palette of champagne and blush – shades used boldly with a dramatic dip-dye or simply hinted at through subtle layered tiers.

We’ve come to expect nothing less than sensational offerings from mother-daughter master-of-design duo Lihi and Mira Zwillinger, but we have to say when we saw their 2017 Collection, we were completely blown away. Spring is in full bloom in each of these soft, sensual and sophisticated gowns, with shimmering sequins and flourishes of delicate floral appliqués adorning the most elegant of silhouettes.

The Whisper of Blossom can be separated into two distinctive styles of dress, each a signature shape of Mira Zwillinger. The first, a dreamy, light-as-air A-line, is the epitome of ‘modern princess’, in this collection it sparkles and glides with pretty silk petals on crystal pleated tulle, exquisitely feminine and thoroughly classic. The second – an ultra modern sheath – plays with sharp cuts, plunging backs, elegant illusion necklines and chic, sophisticated long sleeves (yes please) to bring out an altogether more contemporary edge.
